Pure Michigan Getaways

Some of the best vacations are the unexpected ones: the last-minute, impromptu, hit-the-road-without-a-plan kind of trips. Our native Michigan is home to some amazing adventures for when just such a mood strikes—and they all shine come summertime.

Famous for its fantastic breweries, Grand Rapids is an ideal place to imbibe, whether that means a hoppy All Day IPA at Founders Brewing Co. or a rich plate of ramp carbonara at Reserve Wine & Food. Work off lunch among this western city’s more than 50 nearby lakes and rivers: Try a guided kayak tour of the Grand River, a swim in Millennium Park’s man made lake or a light hike along paved trails.

They call Detroit America’s great comeback city for a reason: For the past few years, the southeastern city has been buzzing with exciting new attractions, from hip dining destinations like Selden Standard to wholesome, Instagram-friendly diners like Rose’s Fine Foods. But don’t forget the classics: No visit is complete without a stop at the Detroit Institute of Arts or the Motown Museum. The city’s new streetcar, the QLINE, makes it even easier to explore.

Summer is when Michiganders head north, and Traverse City is a big reason why. Grab breakfast at Blue Heron 2, then explore the breathtaking Sleeping Bear Dunes—a 64-mile stretch of freshwater beaches, epic sand dunes, hiking trails and unforgettable views. Or keep indulging: The Leelanau Peninsula Wine Trail has three loops of wineries to visit, and the Traverse City Ale Trail features nine local breweries.

The Petoskey Area is known for its namesake Petoskey stones, unique fossils of prehistoric coral. Go hunting for some along the beaches of Lake Michigan, then hit Big Bear Adventures, which offers river trips and a family fun center with mini golf, bumper cars and more. In the evening, peep the stars at Headlands International Dark Sky Park, a 550-acre woodland with summertime views of the Milky Way and, if you’re lucky, meteor showers.
